He was speaking during the opening session of the 21st Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Defence and Security in Kampala, Uganda on 10th March 2017.
“It is important that we review the political and cultural dynamics which lead to various forms of conflict and war in the region, and also to re-align the regions strategies,” he said. He commended the collective efforts and commitment towards lasting peace, security and stability in region and the continent as a whole, as evidenced in the recently concluded successful Presidential elections and smooth transition of power in the Federal Government of the Somali Republic.
The meeting was chaired by Hon Ali Mohamed Salim, State minister of Defence of the Republic of the Sudan. Col Joern Rasmussen, the Acting Chair of Friends of EASF, represented by Amb Mogens Pedersen, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Uganda, reiterated the continued interest and support for efforts to develop EASF as a relevant and efficient mechanism to respond to challenges of peace and security in the region and across the continent.
Brig Gen Tijani Kangbap Golau, Chief of Staff of the Africa Union Peace Operations Division, represented the AU peace and security Commissioner.
The meeting discussed issues related to mechanisms to raise funds through the EASF peace fund, the activity plan for 2017, the financial status of EASF and plans for the upcoming Field Training Exercise (FTX) scheduled for November 2017 in The Republic of the Sudan.
Nine out of the ten EASF member states participated.
