Safeguarding the rights of children

Child ProtectionThe AU considers the rights, protection and welfare of children integral to its overall agenda for sustainable peace and security in Africa. To ensure the realization of the rights, protection and welfare of girls and boys, the AU has put in place; laws, policies, mechanisms and tools that if properly implemented will make Africa fit for its children. Conflict impacts on children differently and disproportionately which calls for deliberate measures to ensure that child protection is integrated into all African Union (AU) Peace Support Operations’ (PSOs) mandates, policies and programs.

EASF at the consultative meeting of the Peace and Security Council

PSC_BurundiThe third consultative meeting of the Peace and Security Council and Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms was held in Bujumbura, Burundi. The EASF Director Brig (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema also attended the meeting, which was aimed at providing a platform for member states to engage in dialogue and collaboration on matters related to peace and security in the region.

Promoting Civil Society Engagement in Peace and Security

Integrated Mission Support Course kicks off

IMSC_AddisThe Integrated Mission Support Course was officially opened today Monday 10th July 2023 in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The course brings together representatives from Member States and EASF staff to be trained in Mission support and Management. It will run from 10th – 20th July 2023.

The Course was officially opened by Dr Mekonin Abebe from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Defence Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation General Directorate.

EASF Launches Voluntary Work in Musasa Refugee Camp, Burundi

Youth for peace BurundiThe Eastern Africa Standby Force has launched the cross border initiative which will include both a youth seminar and community work in a refugee camp in Ngozi, in Burundi. The event was officially opened by the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Eastern Africa Community Severin Mbarubukeye. The project will include construction of a basketball court, setting up of a socio economic club, training of peer counselors in the Musasa refugee camp.

New Director Joins EASF

Outgoing Director FarewellEASF has received a new Director, Brig Paul Kahuria Njema, who takes over from Brig Gen Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa who has served as EASF’s Director from 2020. The handover ceremony took place at the EASF Secretariat in Karen Nairobi on 19th May 2023 and was attended by among others, the Chairperson of Friends of EASF, the EASF management team and EASF staff.

The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Defence in Kenya Hosts Outgoing and Incoming EASF Directors

EASF LogoThe Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Aden Duale, on the 18th May 2023,  hosted the incoming Director of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) Brigadier Paul Kahuria Njema who paid him a courtesy visit at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi. Brigadier Njema was also accompanied by the outgoing Director Brigadier General Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa.
