EASF Delegation Conducts Successful Verification of Djibouti’s Pledged Capabilities

A delegation from the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF), led by Brigadier (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema, Director of EASF, successfully conducted the verification of Djibouti’s pledged military, police, and civilian capabilities. The exercise, which took place from 5 to 6 November 2024, aimed to assess the readiness and effectiveness of Djibouti’s contributions to regional security within the EASF framework. In his opening speech, Brigadier General Taher Ali Mohamed, Chief of Defense Staff of Djibouti, conveyed the greetings and strong support of Djibouti’s Chief of Defense Staff, Army General Zakaria Cheikh Ibrahim. He emphasized the importance of the verification exercise, noting that it reflects Djibouti's unwavering commitment to regional peace and security.

"This exercise is a vital step in ensuring the readiness of our forces to respond to the security challenges facing our region and the African continent," Brigadier General Mohamed said. "Holding this event at Ali-Oune Camp underlines our determination to strengthen peace and cooperation across East Africa." He also extended special recognition to Brigadier General Paul Kahuria Njema for his leadership, as well as to Brigadier General Getachew Ali, EASF Commander, and the team of experts who participated in the exercise.

Brigadier General Mohamed highlighted the central role of the EASF in regional stability, calling the force—a multidimensional entity consisting of military, police, and civilian components—a key vehicle for achieving a peaceful and integrated East Africa.

Brigadier (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema also delivered a speech emphasizing the significance of the verification process. He described it as a crucial step in ensuring the EASF’s operational readiness and reaffirmed the collective commitment to regional stability.

“The verification is not just a formality,” Brigadier (Rtd) Njema stated. “It is essential in ensuring that the East African Standby Force is fully equipped and prepared to execute its mission with the speed, professionalism, and agility required to address the security challenges of our region.”

Dr. Leah Barasa, the Head of EASF’s Civilian Component, served as the mistress of ceremonies for the event. Her presence highlighted the EASF's inclusive approach, integrating civilian, military, and police elements in efforts to enhance regional security.

The exercise marks an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the EASF’s capacity and to build greater regional cohesion in response to emerging security challenges.
