Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Launches Regional Cybersecurity, Cyber Terrorism Workshop in Kampala

Organized in partnership with the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the workshop brings together cybersecurity specialists, digital influencers, policymakers, law enforcement officers, and youth representatives from across Eastern Africa.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Brig Gen David Gonyi, Chief of Staff of the UPDF Air Force and Guest of Honor, commended the EASF for its commitment to enhancing digital security in the region.

“I am greatly honored to join you today at the opening of this very important Cyber-Security and Cyber-Terrorism Awareness Workshop,” he said, praising the organizers for what he termed a timely and necessary engagement. He noted that as governments, businesses, and communities become increasingly dependent on digital systems, cybersecurity has become both a national security and governance priority.

“The world we live in today is increasingly being digitized,” Brig Gen Gonyi said. “While technological advancement offers immense opportunities, it also presents new risks that we must confront together”.

He emphasized the need for collaboration among youth, policymakers, and security agencies, noting that each group plays an essential role in the fight against cybercrime and online radicalization.

EASF’s Head of Administration and Finance, Mr. Souef Kamalidini, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Uganda for hosting the workshop. He highlighted Uganda’s leadership in digital innovation and regional cooperation.

“This workshop is a timely initiative to build awareness, strengthen institutional capacity, and foster cooperation against cyber threats,” Kamalidini said. He encouraged participants to engage fully, share experiences, and work toward practical solutions that will strengthen regional cyber resilience.

Throughout the five days, participants will examine a range of topics including the use of ICTs by terrorist groups, counter-terrorism technologies, digital forensics, online radicalization, and the legal and policy frameworks guiding cybersecurity efforts in the region.

The workshop reaffirms EASF’s commitment to enhancing peace, security, and stability in Eastern Africa’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
