Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Commemorates International Day of Peace

The Eastern Africa Standby Force celebrated the International Day of Peace at the Secretariat in Karen, Nairobi, on 20th September 2019. This year, the 21st of September, which is the United Nation's official International Day of Peace, falls on a Saturday.

The celebrations drew participants from two children's homes in Nairobi, one international school and EASF itself. These were; Arise and Shine Children's Home, Saint Nicholas Children's Home and Hope International School.

The theme of this year's International Day of Peace has been defined by the United Nations as "Climate Action for Peace".

In his keynote address during the ceremony, the EASF Director Dr. Abdillahi Omar Bouh thanked the leaders of the children's institutions present for the participation of children in this important event. Early sensitization of children in matters of peace amplifies their understanding of the significance of peace as they trudge on towards their future aspirations. Dr. Bouh underlined the importance of addressing climate change in order to avert conflicts which arise out of man's interference with the environment.

The representative of EASF's Technical Advisors Colonel Claus Pedersen appealed to individual action as well as collective engagement in addressing climate change. He attributed many conflicts around the world to the outcomes of man's destruction of the environment which in turn leads to scarcity of resources and eventually clashes as human subjects strive to acquire these resources.

The days celebrations were lit up by the children from the above named institutions who rolled out a number of performances covering issues related to peace and security. These performances were delivered in form of poems, public speaking, song and dance.
