Monitoring Conflict in the Region
In line with the crisis prevention component, EASF is taking a more proactive position to monitor conflict situations in all its Member States.
In the recently concluded Presidential elections in the Union of Comoros, EASF was represented by a high level delegation of staff from the secretariat on an assessment and election observation mission from 9th to 18th April 2016. This included the Head of Liaison department who is also the Acting Head of Political Affairs and the Training & Evaluation Officer from the Civilian Component.
The teams main task was to follow up on the situation in Comoros and conduct a general assessment on the security situation as an early warning measure that forms part of the EASF Mandate. Conflict assessment and election monitoring are key responsibilities of the civilian component of the larger EASF multidimensional force which also includes a military and a police component.
During this mission, the team had an opportunity to visit several polling stations in Grand Comoros, including the homelands of every presidential candidate. The team met with the president of the National Independent Electoral Commission, the Minister for Defence, Head of AU Mission in Comoros, Minister for Justice and Acting Minister for Interior as well as Electoral Observers from other regional organisations.
