Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

Management in Talks with AU Officials

Members of Eastern African Standby Force's management held a number of meetings with African Union's senior officials on 13th July 2021 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During the first meeting, the EASF team led by the Director Brig. Gen. Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa, held extensive discussions with African Union's Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye. Amb. Adeoye commended the good work EASF has been doing in sustainment of peace and security across the Eastern Africa region.

Amb. Adeoye emphasized on the importance of cooperation between EASF and other Regional Mechanisms (RMs) as well as Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in enhancement of peace initiatives across the African continent. He reflected on the ongoing deployment of Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Mozambique, intended to contain the current conflict. The Ambassador underlined the need to have a working group between AU Commissioners and other Standby Forces in order to address challenges more effectively.

Brig. Gen. Fayisa thanked the African Union for the enormous financial support it has been according EASF over the years. This contribution, channeled through the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), has been pivotal in EASF's capacity building efforts which seek to ensure that the Standby Force maintains it's critical capabilities at all times.

The EASF management held two other meetings in course of the day. One was with the Acting Director of Peace Support Operations Division Ms. Fiona Lortan while the last one was with the Chief of Staff African Standby Force, Air Vice Marshal Brian John Chikonzo.
