Union of Comoros officially invites EASF to Observe General Elections
The Eastern African Standby Force has been officially invited by the Union of Comoros to observe the forthcoming general elections. The decree sets presidential and regional elections to be held on 24th March, 2019. Following the official invitation, EASF has initiated its planning process in preparation for the possible deployment.
A core team has been set up as part of the Integrated Mission Planning Process (IMPP) with the Civilian Component taking the lead in preparation for the election deployment process. According to the Director of EASF, Dr. Abdillahi Omar Bouh, the main objectives of the EASF observation mission is to support the democratic process, observe and asses the elections in line with the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). The ACDEG was created by the African Union (AU) in 2007 as a roadmap to encourage better governance across the continent. It sets out international standards of good governance and free and fair elections.
As per the planning process, the core team at EASF is looking into the different options and the best possible deployment plan for EASF.
