Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Commemorates International Peace Day

The Eastern Africa Standby Force joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Peace at the Secretariat in Karen, Nairobi on 21st September 2020.

The event was led by the Director, Brig. Gen. Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa together with the Head of Administration and Finance Ms. Lina Peggy Hoareau and the Joint Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. PSC Osman Mohamed Abbas Osman.

Under this year's theme "Shaping Peace Together", the Director called upon each and every person to act as a foundation stone for global peace. "Peace starts with you, peace within yourself, within your families, communities, nations and beyond", Brig. Gen. Fayisa said. He observed that despite many daunting security-related challenges facing the continent and the region including COVID 19, a positive outlook in terms of the prospects of sustainable peace and security, which are the bedrock of achieving economic growth and development, is pivotal.

Among the guests present was the African Union Youth Ambassador for Peace for East Africa Ms. Emma Nganga. In her address during the ceremony, she underscored the importance of building blocks of peace through effective implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Ms. Nganga stressed the need to recognize the roles of youth and women in these efforts as stipulated by the United Nations and in African Union's Continental framework on youth, peace and security.

During the ceremony, the International Advisory Coordinator Mr. Peter Zartsdahl presented a number of donations from the Government of the Royal Kingdom of Denmark to EASF Director. These were, branded jackets and t-shirts to be used during deployment, logos for vehicles and stationary.

The commemoration included tree planting, donations to a needy school and presentation of peace messages in 10 languages used in EASF Member States.
