EASF Green Champions Initiate Activities in Mahama Camp

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) Green Champions have successfully completed their introductory program and are now implementing cross-border Green Champions initiative activities aimed at promoting peacebuilding and environmental awareness in the Mahama refugee camp, Rwanda.

The introductory program, held in Kirehe District on August 12, 2024, included an overview of the EASF, discussions on climate change-induced conflicts, and insights into the EASF Green Champions Initiative. Participants also engaged in a session focused on understanding United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which emphasizes youth participation in peace and security efforts.

The following day, the EASF team and young volunteers arrived at the Mahama refugee camp, where they began their tasks with great enthusiasm, working collaboratively with the refugees.

The EASF Green Champions Initiative is designed to encourage meaningful youth involvement in peacebuilding and environmental programs across all EASF member states. Activities at the Mahama refugee camp, which will continue until August 16, include the refurbishment and construction of shelters for refugees, as well as nursery bed preparation for sustainable agriculture.

On August 17, EASF Director Brigadier (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema will officially launch the Green Champions Initiative. This event will coincide with Youth Day celebrations in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, highlighting the importance of youth engagement in addressing pressing social and environmental challenges.
