Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

The Meeting of the Eastern Africa Chiefs of Defence Forces Kicks Off at the Emara Ole-Sereni Nairobi

The Eastern Africa Standby Force launched the meeting of the Eastern Africa Chiefs of Defence Staff (EACDS) on 25 January 2024 at the Emara Ole-Sereni Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

The two-day Meeting's main objective was to deliberate on various policy, strategic and operational matters affecting the Eastern Africa Standby Force as well as to agree and approve the Organisation’s Activity Plan and Budget for the year 2024.

The Meeting was officially opened by General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya, who has also served as the Chairperson of the Committee of EACDS.

In his opening remarks, General Francis Ogolla welcomed all the delegates to Nairobi, Kenya and expressed his appreciation to the Member States for committing their valuable time to attend the meeting. “This esteemed gathering marks a pivotal moment in our collective pursuit of regional peace, security and collaboration.  I extend my gratitude to each one of you and your respective countries for your commitment to the cause of peace and stability in our Region”, he noted.

The Guest of Honour, Gen Ogolla reminded the Delegates that discussions during the Meeting are expected to shape the direction of the joint efforts of Member States to address the challenges of the Eastern Africa Region that range from interstate and intra-state conflicts, counter-terrorism and cyber security issues, to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. He encouraged the Delegates to engage in open and candid dialogue during the sessions to arrive at effective solutions.  “Let us leverage the diversity of our experiences, perspectives, and capabilities to chart a course that fosters stability and resilience in Eastern Africa”, he added. 

He concluded by wishing the delegates meaningful and fruitful discussions and declared the Meeting of the Eastern Africa Chiefs of Defence Forces officially open.
