EASF Launches Integrated Human Rights' Course

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) launched a two-week Integrated Human Rights (IHR) course at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday 19th November 2018.

The course is aimed at building and enhancing the capacities of the various actors who will be involved in multi-dimensional peace operations to ensure Human Rights’ awareness, compliance, effectively addresses Human Rights violations and mainstream Human Rights principles and practices.

In his welcoming speech, the Joint Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Charles Rudakubana said that EASF is responsible for activities aimed at developing operational capabilities of an integrated standby force, comprising of military, police and civilian personnel, in order to maintain the Full Operational Capability (FOC) of the organization.

The Joint Chief of Staff said “the Integrated Human Rights course is planned to help EASF to increase available capacity in the areas of Human Rights during peace operations and to address the existing training gaps in the field by providing fundamental knowledge and skills needed for effective and efficient Human Rights monitoring, documentation and reporting as evidence-based response during peace operations".

The two-weeks course will cover topics such as, Introduction to Human Rights, International humanitarian law, law of armed conflict, Human Rights in Peace Support Operations (PSOs), Women and Child protection, Emerging Human Rights issues and its impact in peace operations.

Over 21 participants are attending the training including representatives from the nine EASF Member States namely: Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan and Uganda. The course has been fully funded by the Sweden.
