Press Release

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The theme for the celebration this year is ‘shaping peace together’. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Despite the differences we may have, every one of us must play a part in building a peace culture that will last for generations to come.

The Eastern Africa Standby Force will commemorate the day with a special and meaningful event which will include tree planting, donations to a refugee school and presentation of peace messages in various languages. The event will be held at the EASF secretariat in Karen, Nairobi in partnership with the African Union Youth for peace Ambassador for East Africa and other stockholders.

Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. As a regional organization based in Kenya, the EASF is one of the 5 continental standby forces mandated to promote and enhance peace and security in the region.

The Eastern Africa Standby Force would like to join the rest of the world in calling for an end to wars and hostilities and to embrace the spirit of the African Union campaign of silencing the guns for a peaceful and harmonious Africa. Let us join hands in ‘shaping peace together’.
