EASF Election Mission to Ethiopia Launched

The Eastern Africa Standby Force launched an Elections’ Observer Mission for the 6th General Elections in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to be held on 21st June 2021 at the Logistics’ Base in Addis Ababa.

The Head of Mission, Ambassador Abdilahi Aouled Ali Meci officially launched the mission in presence of Member State Ambassadors, representatives from Ethiopian National Election Board, Civil Society, and media personnel.

In his key remarks, the Ambassador reiterated that he is honored and delighted to represent the EASF Election Observation Mission and the entire fraternity of EASF as the Head of Mission during the 6th General Election of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He said, “We recognize the important role of the military and security agencies in any electoral process and we call upon the military, security and law enforcement agencies to maintain a high level of professionalism and integrity.”

The Head of Mission urged all candidates and political leaders to maintain respect and tolerance throughout the election process, to respect human rights and divergence of views. The EASF-EOM also calls on the law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties in a fair and professional manner without political interference.

EASF Election Observer Mission is appealing to the citizens to maintain peace, adherence to the rule of law and to promote respect and tolerance throughout the elections. The EASF-EOM team will travel on 20th June to their respective areas of deployment.

After the EASF-EOM launching ceremony, the Head of Mission, Ambassador Abdilahi Aouled Ali Meci and the Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Lina Hoareau held discussions with representatives from Ethiopian National Elections’ Board (NEBE) at the EASF Logistics’ Base in Addis Ababa. The representatives from NEBE informed the Head of Mission and Deputy Head of Mission that the board has finished all preparations and is doing its best to make the elections free and fair.
