IWD_EASFFriday, 7 March 2025 – The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) marked International Women’s Day at its Structures in Kenya and Addis Ababa, focusing on the promotion of women’s rights and their active involvement in peace processes. This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, underscored the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women globally.

EASF Director, Brigadier (Rtd) Paul Kahuria Njema, emphasized the force’s crucial role in preparing member states for Peace Support Operations (PSOs) under the African Union/EASF mandate. He called for collective efforts to transform challenges faced by women into opportunities, urging individuals, organizations, and communities to take part in shaping a better future for all.

EASF Force Commander Brigadier General Getachew Ali extended his congratulations to EASF women and women worldwide, highlighting the necessity of enhancing women’s rights. He noted that gender equality remains one of the most significant human rights challenges, stressing that investing in women is pivotal for building inclusive societies.

In line with these commitments, EASF’s recent Policy Organs Meetings approved a review of the EASF Gender Policy to strengthen the organization’s dedication to gender mainstreaming. This year’s Activity Plan also focuses on advancing the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) and Youth Peace and Security (YPS) agenda.

Dr. Leah Barasa, Head of the Civilian Component, called for action to unlock funding for equality, close the gender pay gap, and address issues surrounding care work. She also advocated for stronger laws to combat violence against women and girls, ensuring their full participation in decision-making, especially in peacebuilding.

Kenneth Albert, Civilian Advisor and IACS Coordinator, emphasized the vital contributions of women in conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding. The programme  included a tree planting ceremony in Addis Ababa, symbolizing solidarity for women’s empowerment.

Throughout the week, EASF showcased the achievements and challenges of its female members on its official website and social media platforms. The celebrations included panel discussions on gender equality, women's empowerment, and training initiatives.
