How promising it is to be a woman in the 21st century—a time when women's voices and actions are finally being recognized. We now live in an era where women have a seat at the table. For far too long, women's voices went unheard, and their contributions overlooked. We are gradually transitioning from a time when women were seen as objects—meant to be seen, not heard—to an era where their full potential is acknowledged.

The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) recognises the importance of women in peace and security, calling for increased participation in conflict prevention, peace negotiations, and post-conflict reconstruction. As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025 with the theme “For all women and girls: Rights. Equity. Empowerment #Accelerate Action,” it is vital to recognize the significant contributions of women in fostering peace during times of conflict and adversity. Women often bear the brunt of war, taking on roles as caregivers, rebuilders, and advocates for social justice. Though frequently marginalized, their voices are essential for sustainable peace, emphasizing empathy and community cohesion.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reflect on the remarkable achievements of women everywhere, and specifically today, I want to honor the strength, courage, and beauty of the women who serve in the military. When we think of beauty, society often defines it through narrow lenses—glamour, appearances, or softness. But true beauty is so much more. It’s not just about what we see on the surface; it’s about strength, resilience, determination, and the way one carries themselves through the trials of life. It’s the beauty of character, bravery, and sacrifice. And that is the essence of the women who wear the uniform of our military.

A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. I pray that we all find our voices in an ever so difficult world. In the words of Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) ‘Here’s to strong women; may we know them, may we be them; may we raise them’. Today and Always.

The importance of including women and women’s voices in peace negotiations, transitional bodies and in long-term political processes is increasingly accepted. Research shows that women are deeply committed to peace building and post-conflict reconstruction and have a unique perspective and a solid understanding of the needs of their communities. Women tend to have more inclusive leadership styles, which promote consensus in negotiations. Women are skillful at working across divides whether they be religious, ethnic, political or cultural. Women have access that men do not (for example, to other women) are seen to be less threatening and tend to be influential within their families and communities.

While progress has been made to overcome outdated mindsets and empower women, there is still significant work to be done. Women continue to face disproportionate household responsibilities and barriers to leadership and economic opportunity. Women's participation and representation remains crucial for achieving lasting peace and security, particularly in East Africa. However, women are underrepresented in key positions within the Eastern African Standby Force, limiting their ability to contribute meaningfully to these critical efforts.

This iconic quote from historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich underscores a fundamental truth - that transformative change often requires individuals, especially women, to challenge the status quo and disrupt societal norms.
Throughout history, the most influential women have been those who have refused to be constrained by expectations of "proper" or "ladylike" behavior. Instead, they have boldly advocated for their rights, pushed the boundaries of what was deemed acceptable, and paved the way for greater equality and progress.
