Youth Ambassador Meets EASF Director

The African Youth Ambassador for Eastern Africa, Ms Emma Ng’ang’a paid a courtesy call on the Director of EASF, Brigadier General Shiferaw Feyisa on Monday 20th July at the EASF Secretariat, in Karen, Nairobi.

The EASF Director and the Youth Ambassador discussed about the role of EASF in maintaining peace in the region and how EASF can further support the peace, security, and youth agenda. The Director pointed out that the meeting with Ambassador Emma is opportune as EASF is currently developing its strategic plan 2021 – 2025 hence, the right time to take cognition of the youth engagement and partnership in the upcoming strategic plan. On her part, the youth Ambassador expressed her wishes in collaborating with EASF on youth issues in line with the African Union youth charter. The meeting was attended by the Head of Peace Operations Department, Brigadier General Henry Isoke, EASF’s Youth Focal Person, Mr. Jules Hoareau and the Military Assistant to the Director Lt. Col. Edward Onyango.
 
Ambassador Emma also presented a brief about her project to help the street children with social rehabilitation and advocacy for youth to be given space for a meaningful engagement at national and continental levels in areas of peace and security. The appointment of African Youth Ambassadors for Peace (AYAP) is in line with the decision of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) through the communiqué of its 807th meeting held in November 2018 on Youth, Peace, and Security. The Council requested the AU Commission to appoint the AYAP to work with the AU Youth Envoy in championing the promotion of peace and security across the continent.
 
Ambassador Ng’ang’a is very passionate about Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, she is equally interested in the areas of youth, peace, and security. Ms. Emma Ng’ang’a from Kenya together with youth ambassadors from the other four regions were instituted subsequently, through recommendation by the PSC, the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of States and Governments held in February 2020 in close collaboration with the Regional Economic Commissions/Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) and the AU. The youth ambassadors are elected for a two-year non-renewable term and are mandated to advocate and promote the mainstreaming and inclusion of young Africans in peace and security by strengthening their contributions and resilience, challenging and encouraging policy and programmatic actions to address the challenges facing the continent.
