EASF to observe Somalia Presidential Election

The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) announces the arrival of its election observation mission (EOM) for the Presidential Election in the Federal Republic of Somalia. The Director of the Eastern Africa Standby Force, Brigadier General Getachew Shiferaw Fayisa, accepted the invitation from the host country, the Federal Republic of Somalia and consequently has deployed the mission (EOM) to observe and report on the conduct of the presidential election due to take place on 15th May, 2022.

 

The Eastern Africa Standby Force Election Observation Mission (EASF-EOM) will be based in Mogadishu. The Eastern Africa Standby Force Election Observation Mission (EASF-EOM) will be headed by Mr. Elrayes Ahmed Ali Mozamil from the Republic of Sudan. The EASF-EOM in Somalia will meet with relevant stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

The EASF-EOM assessment will be based on relevant provisions of the AU African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance of 2012 (ACDEG), the OAU/ AU Declaration of on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, other relevant international instruments on election observation as well as national legal framework governing elections in the Federal Republic of Somalia. 

EASF urges all candidates and political leaders to maintain respect and tolerance throughout the election process, to respect human rights and divergence of views. We call on the law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties in a professional manner. The EASF-EOM calls on everyone to maintain a calm and peaceful environment and calls on all political leaders to promote a culture of peace, tolerance and respect especially during this important democratic process in Somalia.

EASF Election Observer Mission is appealing to the citizens to maintain peace, adherence to the rule of law and to promote respect and tolerance throughout the elections.

The EASF will issue a preliminary statement based on the objective assessment of the process on Monday 16th May, 2022.
