The Pearl of Africa hosting EASF High-Level Meetings

The 27th Ordinary Session of EASF's Policy Organs' Meetings (POM) was officially opened today Monday 2nd of December, 2019 at the Protea Skyz Hotel in Kampala, Uganda.

POM is a series of three high-level meetings conducted as per EASF regulations. The first meeting is that of the EASF Experts Working Group.

It was the Guest of Honour, Maj. Gen. Sam Kavuma from the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces who officially opened the Experts Working Group meeting. In his address to the delegates from all ten EASF member states, Maj. Gen. Kavuma pointed out the great achievements of EASF particularly, in the discharge of its mandate in promoting peace in the region.

The aim of the meeting is to apprise the higher leaders of the Eastern Africa Region on the progress made by EASF since the 26th Ordinary Policy Organs' Meetings held in July 2019 in Bujumbura, Burundi.

In his welcoming remarks, the Chairperson of EASF, Brig. Gen. Venuste Nduwayo from Burundi highlighted the key achievements of EASF notably, the signing of the MoU with Denmark on capacity building and the EASF's deployment of election observers in the Union of Comoros for the last Presidential elections held this year.

The Director of EASF Dr. Abdillahi Omar Bouh informed the meeting that the Secretariat had far and wide implemented the Council's decisions and the EASF Activity Plan 2019 as programmed, is standing at around 78% completion at the closure of November 2019. The Director also pointed out the remarkable contributions of the Nordic Advisory and Coordination Staff (NACS) over the last 10 years of partnership with EASF.

After the closure of the Experts Working Group meeting on Tuesday 3rd December 2019, Wednesday 4th December will see the start of the Chiefs of Defense’ meeting to take place, still at the same venue.

EASF also conveyed its utmost appreciation to the Republic of Uganda, to the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces and to EASF member states for their contributions and participation in the 27th Policy Organs Meetings of 2019.
