Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

EASF Contributes to the AUC's Meeting on Peace and Security

The Assembly focussed on the status of peace and security in Africa as well as practical steps that could be taken to silence the guns on the continent by the year 2020.

During the meeting, the Chairperson of the AUC, H.E. Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat maintained that the Commission would lay a special emphasis on humanitarian action in solidarity with victims of drought, famine and forced displacement. The commission would also prioritize the planning and implementation of strategic development programes such as executing some integral projects for the benefit of African people.

The EASF Delegation to the Assembly was led by the Director, Dr. Abdillahi Omar Bouh.

The Assembly was followed by another AUC meeting of senior officials from Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (REMs) and the European Union (EU) which had been convened to discuss matters of peace and security on the continent on 5th July 2017 at the same venue.

The status of implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) was one of the central items on the day's agenda. In this area, Dr. Bouh informed the meeting of the considerable strides that EASF has made in implementation of the APSA Roadmap 2015-2020.

The Director updated the participants on the Standby Force's efforts in building bridges with RECs and REMs on the continent in order to enhance sharing of information, capacity building and advocacy. EASF has been implementing its Early Warning Policy progressively; it is now possible to monitor real time situations as well as conduct Conflicts' Analysis within the region. Such information is of critical importance in conflict mitigation.

EASF remains ready and committed to prevention of conflicts within the region.
