“Women as Pillars of Peace: A Tribute for International Women’s Day 2025”
The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) recognises the importance of women in peace and security, calling for increased participation in conflict prevention, peace negotiations, and post-conflict reconstruction. As we celebrate International Women's Day 2025 with the theme “For all women and girls: Rights. Equity. Empowerment #Accelerate Action,” it is vital to recognize the significant contributions of women in fostering peace during times of conflict and adversity. Women often bear the brunt of war, taking on roles as caregivers, rebuilders, and advocates for social justice. Though frequently marginalized, their voices are essential for sustainable peace, emphasizing empathy and community cohesion.
Empowering women and girls is both a moral and strategic necessity. Research shows that countries with greater gender equality enjoy more lasting peace. By advocating for women's participation across political, economic, and social realms, we strengthen foundations for peace and equity. The benefits are varied: complimentary perspectives in peacebuilding processes, empathy and better understanding of conflict resolution, empowerment of local communities, and fostering sustainable peace.
This International Women's Day, let’s commit to uplifting women's voices, advocating for their rights, and enabling them to be key players in peacebuilding efforts. Through collective action, we can strive for a world where all women and girls experience safety, equality, and empowerment.
