EASF Observers Safe and Sound
The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) deployed 27 observers yesterday on all three islands of the Union of Comoros. The Eastern Africa Standby Force Election Observation Mission (EASF EOM) is led by retired Lt. Gen. Germain Niyoyankana, former Defence Minister of the Republic of Burundi.
The EASF EOM has the mandate for independent, impartial and objective observation of elections. Its assessment will be based on relevant provisions of the AU African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance of 2012 (ACDEG), the OAU/ AU Declaration of/on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, other relevant international instruments on election observation as well as national legal framework governing presidential and governors’ elections of the Autonomous Islands of the Union of The Comoros.
All our observers are safe and sound and those from Moheli and Anjouan are now heading back to the EASF mission HQ in Moroni. Some of our observer teams were not able to observe the closing of polling in their designated areas of deployment due to incidents of violence and roadblocks. We are still observing the situation and as per EASF’s joint appeal issued on 23rd of March, we are calling on the citizens to maintain peace.
EASF is expected to release its preliminary statement on 26th March, 2019.
