Enhancing Peace and Security in the Eastern Africa Region

US Mission to AU Team Holds Talks with EASF Officials

A delegation of representatives of the US Mission to Africa Union held crucial talks with EASF officials at the Force Headquarters in Addis Ababa on 26th January 2018.

The purpose of the meeting was to explore possible areas of collaboration between the two partners in order to enhance peace and security in the Eastern Africa region.

During the meeting, the EASF Director, Dr Abdillahi Omar Bouh briefed the guests on the roles and responsibilities of the regional peace-keeper within the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). In this regard, EASF has the responsibility of ensuring that it can intervene and deploy its forces in conflict torn areas within the region and beyond when and if mandated to do so by the African Union. Such readiness is anchored on regular Peace Support Operations' (PSO) Exercises like the recently concluded Field Training Exercise (FTX) 2017.

The leader of the US delegation Col. William Boswell expressed profound willingness to support EASF in strategic air-lifts in upcoming exercises and other areas such as capacity building. The delegation notified the Director and EASF officials present that there will be an African Logistics Forum in April 2018 which will mainly focus on logistics' support for Regional Mechanisms and the entire African Union.

In course of the day, Dr. Bouh and his team held a similar meeting with a French delegation led by Col. Patrick Vaglio at the Force Headquarters to discuss areas of possible collaboration in matters of peace and security.
