Rwanda Hands Over Chairmanship of Eastern Africa Standby Force to Somalia

Kigali, Rwanda – December 21, 2024- Rwanda officially handed over the chairmanship of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) to the Federal Republic of Somalia during the 33rd Ordinary Policy Organs Meeting held on December 21, 2024, in Kigali.

This key event was marked by a session of the Council of Ministers of Defence and Security of the Eastern Africa Standby Force, which convened to discuss critical issues related to peace and security in the Eastern African region.

The meeting was officially opened by Rwanda's Minister of Defence, Hon. Marizamunda Juvenal, who has served as the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers of Defence and Security. Hon. Juvenal highlighted the region's collective efforts towards ensuring stability and peace, emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation and shared responsibility in addressing security challenges.

 

Following the opening remarks, the formal handover ceremony took place, with Rwanda transferring the chairmanship of the EASF to Somalia. The Federal Republic of Somalia will hold the position for the upcoming year, taking on leadership responsibilities for the regional peace and security initiatives of the Eastern Africa Standby Force.

The handover marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts of the EASF to foster peace and stability in Eastern Africa, underscoring the commitment of member states to working together to address regional security concerns.
